Top 5 ways to get your foot in the door
The Globe University/Minnesota School of Business career services team is out on the streets talking to area employers every single day. Our goal? To tap into hidden job markets and find job postings for our students and grads before they ever go public. We also have a pulse on what employers are looking for. Here’s what you can do to land the job you want:
1. Develop Your Personal Brand
What can you offer to employers that make you unique? Create a professional message, a 60-second commercial highlighting your skills, strengths and uniqueness. Be prepared to deliver this commercial at any given moment.
Be sure to project a professional image, in-person as well as online. Google yourself. What information is out there about you? How about photos? Set your privacy settings on Facebook. Highlight your education, experience and skills on LinkedIn. Dress professionally and tailor your resume for the job you want, highlighting what you can do. Understand your industry, what employers are looking for and how you fit those needs. Give employers reasons why they should hire YOU.
2. Do Your Research!
Get to know your industry or the company you are targeting. Employers want to know why you want to work specifically for their company (not just: "I need a job."). Research their mission, size, successes and challenges. Know what separates them from their competitors. This will show initiative and enthusiasm for wanting to work there.
3. Network, Network, Network
Let your friends, family, neighbors and classmates know what career options you are seeking. Make connections with a company you are interested in via LinkedIn or at networking events. Who do you know who already works for that company or who can help you connect with someone at the company?
4. Gain Experience
Get involved! Make things happen by volunteering, completing an internship and joining organizations in your career field. Proactively set up informational interviews and apply for related positions to get in the door with a company. Take professional development courses and apply for industry certifications. Find ways to make yourself stand out!
5. Be Persistent
Finally, don't just put in your application and forget about it. Give the employer a follow-up call asking if they've received your resume. Remind them how much you're looking forward to meeting with them. Keep in mind it's rare to get hired at the first job you apply for. It's easy to become discouraged when you hear "no" or don’t hear anything at all. Use rejection as constructive feedback to improve. Look for other similar positions and companies. Stay positive and keep your options open!
