In the thirteen years that I’ve been teaching, I’ve noticed that the IT industry has gone from being a very scattered industry to a very focused industry. Right now, web technologies is hot and we’re currently placing a lot of students in the web technology industry.

But right along with that, we’re also placing a lot of students in the infrastructure area in a help desk position, because everybody’s using IT, everybody needs IT support. Businesses can’t function without IT.

For our students, when they graduate with their associate or bachelor’s degree, most of them will be starting out in a help desk position. Some of them, if they’re in web technologies, will be starting out working with someone in web technologies until they get their feet under them a little more.

Entry-level positions are generally what our students are geared for. Some of our more advanced students, with experience, will be getting into more senior level positions or advanced help desk positions.

With our bachelor’s degree program, there are actually three different emphases that a student can get into. One is server administration, one is networking administrator, and the third is web technologies. In all three of these areas, security is seen as paramount on how you secure a website, how you secure your network from outside hackers or inside hackers coming into your network.

So yes, there are different areas of specialization. IT is a real broad area, and you really do need to specialize. Nobody can know everything in IT. So we offer several different specialties, and even within that you can choose more options, more classes for more different options.

If you’re like me and you want to solve puzzles or you enjoy a new challenge all the time, the IT field is really where you want to go.
