The following occupations represent the world of technology today—it's a dynamic playing field, and you should expect to continue to learn and grow over the course of your career.

Computer network, systems and database administrators: Employment for these positions is projected to grow much faster than average for all occupations—286,600 new jobs are expected to be added to the market. The median wage for workers in this IT career area is $66,310.*

Computer systems analysts: The employment outlook is excellent. Job opportunities for analysts are projected to grow much faster than the national average, with an expected 20% increase in jobs. The median salary for IT professionals in this career field is $75,500.*

Computer software engineers and computer programmers: Computer software engineering is projected to be one of the fastest growing occupations, adding the most new jobs. The median salary range for computer applications software engineers is $85,430 and for computer systems software engineers, $92,430. While the projected job-growth outlook for computer programmers isn’t as positive, the median salary of $69,620 and perennial demand for skilled workers continues to make this a rewarding IT career field.*

Computer support specialists: The employment outlook for this specialty is projected to grow faster than the national average, with an expected 14% increase in jobs. The median salary for this entry-level IT career area is $43,450.*

Qualifications and training for careers in IT

Depending on the position, an employer might seek a candidate with a specific industry certification, or may require a bachelor's or associate degree that demonstrates a broad spectrum of knowledge. Management positions generally require an advanced degree such as an MBA, MIS or MSM.
