Paralegal College Program

Students in paralegal college programs at Globe University/Minnesota School of Business receive practical, hands-on training from instructors who are themselves lawyers and paralegals/legal assistants

Paralegal career outlook

Graduates of our college look forward to rewarding careers in law firms, legal departments in various industries and as military paralegals. Paralegal salaries are rising and demand is growing as law firms and clients recognize the value of having services provided by paralegals rather than attorneys whenever possible. In the Twin Cities, the Esquire Group (Legal Search and Staffing Report, 2007) recently reported the following paralegal salary ranges, by experience level:

  • $34,000-44,000 with 1-3 years of experience
  • $44,000-50,000 with 3-5 years of experience
  • $50,000-90,000 with more than 5 years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant

The National Federation of Paralegal Associations Inc. (NFPA) reported that the average paralegal salary was $50,496 (Compensation and Benefits Study Report, 2006). CNNMoney.com* ranked paralegal as one of the 20 best jobs in 2008  And the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics reports that the paralegal profession is one of the fastest growing careers in the country (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008-2009).

Which paralegal college program is right for you?

Our college offers two degree programs that prepare students for futures as paralegals:

Bachelor of Science in Paralegal: As paralegals assume more complex responsibilities, more and more employers require applicants for positions as legal assistant and paralegals to have bachelors’ degrees. Students in our paralegal studies program take advanced courses that apply directly to the legal profession.

Associate in Applied Science in Paralegal: The A.A.S. in Paralegal prepares a student to enter the legal assistant field after 7-8 quarters of legal studies. It also serves as a base for a bachelors’ degree in paralegal or social science studies.

Paralegal Certificate Program: The post-baccalaureate paralegal certificate program at Globe University/Minnesota School of Business provides legal knowledge and related skills valued by employers in government agencies, military, corporate legal departments and law firms.

Our college’s paralegal training: classroom knowledge, real-life practice

Classroom projects focus on legal knowledge, communications skills and realistic problem-solving strategies that successful legal assistants use in the course of their work. In typical assignments, students are asked to create trial notebooks with evidence and witness lists, or produce researched legal memorandums using Westlaw, Lexis and the law library. Students then put that knowledge and those skills to practice in the field during a paralegal internship.

Legal knowledge: Paralegal courses leading to college degrees at GU/MSB cover a wide range of legal topics, including criminal law and procedures, administrative law, Constitutional law, family law, probate, bankruptcy, litigation, contracts and real estate law.

Communication skills: A paralegal prepares critical documents and interacts with clients and others on behalf of the law firm or corporation. Communication skills are critical Our paralegal programs include courses in business communications, computer information systems, legal terminology, law office procedures, legal research and legal writing.

Paralegal internship: The paralegal internship, a requirement of either paralegal college program at GU/MSB, provides students with opportunities to demonstrate and refine their skills in the diverse and complex environment of a law office or business, and add valuable relationships to their professional network. Students work for 180 hours in a law firm or legal environment, under the supervision of an attorney. A student can choose the area of law in which to perform this internship.

At Globe University/Minnesota School of Business we believe in career training for a lifetime of success and professional growth. Our graduates receive lifetime career services as they advance in their fields.
