Careers in Correction Systems: Criminal Justice Degrees

According to the Minnesota Department of Corrections, the Minnesota prison population has more than quadrupled over the last 25 years, and an additional 27% growth is expected by the year 2014. The demand for trained corrections officers to serve as corrections officers in prisons and county jails, and as parole officers and detention officers is growing accordingly. At Globe University/Minnesota School of Business, we provide career training designed to meet that demand.

Where do you fit into the corrections system?

The corrections system offers good pay, excellent benefits, and opportunities for continued advancement up career ladders for those with criminal justice and related degrees.

Local, state and federal agencies and non-profit social services organizations are looking for well-qualified candidates. Corrections officers include those who have direct contact with offenders; and those who work behind the scenes in surveillance and special investigations, ensuring safety and security and preventing contraband from entering facilities.

An Associate in Criminal Justice degree will prepare you for entry-level positions, including the following, in the corrections system:

  • Corrections officers supervise inmates and offenders during incarceration in county jails and state and federal prisons, enforcing facility rules and maintaining security. If you are interested in serving as a positive role model and a stabilizing influence, this might be the position for you.
  • Sentencing to Service crew leaders supervise offenders in the community. The Sentencing to Service (STS) program provides sentencing alternatives. As an STS crew leader you will supervise work crews of adult and juvenile offenders in labor-intensive projects for government agencies and non-profit organizations.
  • Victim advocates provide support services to victims of crime, on behalf of government and non-profit agencies.
  • Community corrections case aides have duties similar to assistant probation officers.
  • Monitoring specialists work for private companies that provide home-monitoring for offenders on supervised release and probation.
  • Drug and alcohol testing coordinators work with referring agencies and probation officers in securing samples for testing, maintain databases and observing “chain of custody” procedures.
  • Hearings and release officers work in state and federal penitentiary systems.
