Systems administrator, network security analyst, compliance consultant, systems analyst, member of a systems hazard and intrusion response team – information technology offers exciting opportunities outside of programming and software engineering.
Information Technology degree with an emphasis on networking & security
The Globe University/Minnesota School of Business Bachelor’s in Information Technology degree program includes an elective concentration for networking and security professionals. A graduate of this track may enter the field as a security maintenance specialist, assigning permissions, monitoring hazards and watching for suspicious activities, or acting as an interface between users and programmers.
An information technology degree, however, is one of the most portable on the job market. It is likely that after a short time, a specialist will advance to a new job in which he or she is responsible for identifying inefficiencies or hazards and developing and implementing remedies, policies, training and corporate procedures.
Skills, knowledge and preparation for future learning
The courses contained in the networking and security path provide skills and knowledge of networking, security and related business topics. This path serves as a base for an entry-level position in information technology and supports career-long professional development.
The information technology networking and security track includes lower-level IT, algebra, statistics and business courses that are fundamental to all technology training. A student then completes upper level courses on current technologies – training that will need to be updated throughout the person’s career. Technologies covered include Windows Servers, Cisco routers and wireless security – skills that will distinguish a graduate among job-seekers.
Networking and information security electives
Although the networking and security track does not emphasize programming, students are encouraged to pay careful attention to the two courses that deal with software and systems development (SD110 Computer Programming Logic and SD205 Systems Analysis and Design). An IT professional must be prepared to communicate with programmers on a professional level in order to maintain mutual respect, understanding and important business relationships.
Statistics, accounting, finance and economics courses provide the networking and information security professional with applied math skills necessary to provide and support business operations. A graduate of the program will have an impressive combination of competencies.
Business and general education electives
Business courses and general education courses provide a strong foundation in the knowledge expected of business professionals. Topics include accounting, finance, management, operations, marketing, economics, and statistics. A graduate will be prepared to adapt to the culture of a small business or large corporation, and will have an excellent foundation for an MBA degree program.
The networking professional as a communicator
The elective track includes an emphasis on communications. CM311 addresses traditional models of communication important to IT professionals. CM320 Writing & Research provides evidence-based writing skills. The 2-quarter sequence in Spanish encourages the student to travel and prepare to serve diverse and global audiences.
Keyboarding – an essential skill
Keyboarding classes are not required for the information technology degree, but a student without strong keyboarding skills should take keyboarding classes (three quarters) beginning in the first quarter of the program. These may be counted as business electives and will pay dividends throughout the business or IT professional’s career.
