Opportunities abound for information technology professionals who have both sound technical skills and fundamental business training. At Globe University/Minnesota School of Business, the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology degree program offers an elective concentration in Business Application Programming, a production track that prepares graduates for those opportunities.
Serving small businesses as contractors, or working in-house with large corporations, business application programmers write, update and maintain programs essential to production and operations, and serve as systems administrators and database managers. Of the various IT degree programs at GU/MSB, a four-year B.S. in Information Technology that incorporates the Business Application Programming track is perhaps the most rigorous and versatile.
IT skills and business knowledge
Courses in the Business Application Programming path provide a foundation of applied math, business knowledge and IT systems development skills that prepares graduates for entry-level employment as business application developers and provide a basis for training in future developments information technology. Program graduates are well-prepared for an MBA degree program.
Upper-level elective courses in the Business Application Programming track cover current technologies, including web application development and database design and administration, training that distinguishes a job applicant in the employment market.
Database and software development electives
Data is at the core of information technology. The promise of any computer system is to provide users with the ability to store, retrieve, process, and distribute information. It is the job of the business application programmer to make good on this promise. The program includes training in database development, deployment and the ability to develop applications, including web applications, that interface with an organization’s database.
Math for IT professionals in the business world
Statistics, accounting, finance and economics courses provide the math skills IT professionals need to effectively communicate with and serve business organizations. In combination with extensive knowledge of current technologies, including web development with Visual Basic.NET, database development and SQL server administration, those applied math skills provide the IT professional with an impressive combination of competencies.
Business and general education electives
The business and general education courses provide knowledge expected of any business professional. Topics include accounting, finance, management, operations, marketing, economics, and statistics, and prepare students to function effectively in small businesses and multi-national corporations.
Communication – an essential IT skill
The Business Application Programing track features a secondary emphasis in communication. CM311 addresses traditional models of communication important to IT professionals. CM320 Writing and Research provides evidence-based writing skills. Two upper-level courses in literature provide diverse frames of reference, preparing graduates to function in the global workforce of the 21st Century.
Keyboarding basics
A student without strong keyboarding skills should take keyboarding classes beginning in the first quarter of the program. Keyboarding classes are not required, but may be counted as business electives, and the recommended three quarters will pay dividends throughout a business or IT professional’s career.
