As a certified medical assistant (CMA), you will be on the front line of patient care, working closely with a doctor to deliver medical services in a clinical setting, holding to professional standards and helping clients from all cultures and walks of life. At Globe University/Minnesota School of Business, we will provide the training to set you on that course.
Qualifications of a medical assistant
It is essential that a medical assistant be compassionate and have exceptional interpersonal skills. The assistant may answer questions, pass on doctor’s instructions, return patient calls and help patients deal with stressful tests and treatments. In fact, the patient may have more contact with the medical assistant than with the doctor or nurse.
A medical assistant must be able to multi-task and adapt to change. A medical assistant may have to, within a few minutes, greet a patient and take a medical history, assist a physician with another patient’s exam, call a third patient to pass on the doctor’s instructions regarding medication, return to the first exam room to draw blood, and enter patient information in a new computer system. All of that in an environment where it is critical to keep track of details.
A medical assistant must have technical training and medical knowledge. A medical assistant has to understand medical terminology—and be ready to translate it into common language for patients; have the skills to collect laboratory specimens and perform basic tests; have a basic knowledge of prescription drugs; and, depending on the position, be a radiology technician.
Associate degree and college diploma programs for medical assistants
If your goal is to receive specific training you will apply directly on the job, and begin your career as a medical assistant as quickly as possible, consider the Medical Assistant Diploma program.
If you are already working in a medical setting, with or without a diploma, you may want to position yourself for leadership opportunities by earning a two-year college degree, the Associate in Medical Assistant. In doing so, you will receive all medical and technical training offered in the diploma program, along with 30 credits in liberal arts.
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Certified Radiology Technologist (CRT)
When selecting a college, be sure you will receive training in the skills employers are looking for. Both the Medical Assistant Diploma program and the Associate in Medical Assistant program at GU/MSB prepare students for medical assistant certification exams leading to the most-sought-after credential in the field: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA). Graduates of the associate degree program are prepared for the Certified Radiology Technology (CRT) exam.
