As a medical administrative assistant, you will be an Allied Health Professional, a critical member of a team of health-care professionals. Your support services will allow doctors and nurses to deliver top-quality care.

What does a medical administrative assistant do?

A medical administrative assistant secretary or medical secretary handles clerical and administrative duties related to the health care industry. It will be your job to see the office runs smoothly. Your responsibilities might include the following:

  • Scheduling patient appointments
  • Transcribing medical records
  • Handling written and verbal communications
  • Receptionist
  • Maintaining records
  • Completing insurance and other medical forms
  • Office management

As you gain experience, you will be positioned for additional managerial and professional responsibilities.

Medical administrative assistants are in demand at hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, doctors’ offices, local and state health departments, federal health-care agencies, group medical practices, military service branches and medical research facilities.
