Health Care Management in the Insurance Industry

Health insurance providers, public and private facilitate the health-care delivery system, serving as a critical link between consumers and health-care providers. It is increasingly difficult to perform that function effectively and efficiently. As a result, there is a growing demand in the health insurance industry for skilled health care management professionals.

Preparing for a management position with a health insurance provider

At Globe University/Minnesota School of Business, it is our overriding goal to provide students with current, industry-specific skills. When developing a program to train health care managers, we assembled an advisory board composed of members of the health insurance industry, government agencies and community organizations. Board members, anticipating major changes in the health insurance industry over the next few years, recommended the following elements be included in our Bachelor’s in Health Care Management degree program. (Contact us for detailed program information.)

Courses and classroom exercises focus on critical leadership and management skills in the areas of communication, interpersonal relationships, and analytical and inferential reasoning. Students also receive industry-specific training in areas including health information systems, hospital administration, ambulatory care systems, and public health; and in general management principles, including business administration, human resources management and accounting.

Graduates of our health-care management program are prepared to analyze market and policy-driven trends in the health insurance system, including employer-based, private and public insurance programs, and take strategic measures to enhance efficiencies in administration.

Career opportunities in the health insurance industry

The health insurance industry provides a wide range of opportunities for integrated health systems management professionals. Employers include health maintenance organization (HMOs), preferred provider organizations (PPOs), private insurance providers that cater to the healthcare market; and state and federal health insurance agencies (Medicare, Medicaid and state-specific programs).

Some graduates of GU/MSB focus exclusively on business management and administration for the health insurance industry. Others complement their management skills with training or experience in health care, technology or another area. Depending on a job candidate’s specific background and training, a program graduate will be eligible for a variety of positions, including the following:

  • Financial analyst
  • Administrator
  • Human resource specialist
  • Customer service representative
  • Marketing specialist
  • Claims processing manager
  • Health care quality coordinator
  • Underwriter/actuarial analyst
  • Information technology specialist
