Allied health professionals provide care in clinics, urgent care centers and other ambulatory care settings (those outside of hospitals). The trend away from hospitalization, driven by increasing healthcare costs, has created a demand for healthcare professionals with specific training.
Allied health providers
Allied health is a broad category. Practitioners include medical assistants, massage therapists, personal trainers, wellness coordinators, medical administrative assistants, chiropractors, music therapists and a variety of laboratory and medical technicians. Veterinary technicians and veterinary technologists may also be considered allied health care providers.
Certified Allied Health training
Health science degree programs at Globe University/Minnesota School of Business prepare graduates to provide skilled, science-based care while demonstrating high professional and ethical standards. The college's Medical Assisting programs in Richfield, Woodbury, Brooklyn Center, Plymouth, Shakopee, St. Cloud, Rochester and Blaine are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Curriculum Review board of the American Association of Medical Assistants Endowment (AAMAE).

Cross-training multi-talented employees
An allied health professional is likely to work in a small group or as the sole assistant to a physician, chiropractor, veterinarian or other healthcare provider. As a result, a single employee may be expected to handle a wide range of responsibilities – running lab tests, greeting clients, taking patient histories, handling billing and recordkeeping, and assisting with in-clinic surgeries.
At Globe University/Minnesota School of Business, we see that our students receive the broad-based training they need to handle those diverse responsibilities. Graduates of our allied health programs take courses in small business management, communications, medical terminology and computer skills courses – employers tell us how much they appreciate this general business training.
Identifying skills healthcare employers value
An advisory board – a group of professionals and employers with expertise in a specific area of healthcare – regularly reviews allied health degree and diploma programs in that area. Board members identify critical skills a graduate will need to be successful in the profession, and GU/MSB incorporates appropriate skill training in the college program.
- Seasoned certified medical assistants see that our medical assistant program graduates are prepared for certification exams.
- Veterinarians and veterinary technicians see that our veterinary technology graduates know the latest clinical techniques.
- Experienced massage therapists provide graduates of our massage therapy program with skills and professional standards that keep clients coming back.
- Personal trainers, fitness center managers and wellness experts see that students in our Health Fitness Specialist degree programs receive thorough, science-based training that protects clients and impresses employers.
- Medical office managers and administrative assistants designed our Medical Administrative Assistant programs, providing students with medical and business training valued by clinics and care centers.
The future of the allied health professions
Our population is aging, and today’s adults demand healthcare services that allow them to remain active and live independently far longer than their parents did. Corporations, school districts and community recreation departments are hiring wellness coaches, fitness experts and activity leaders. More and more people are discovering the physical and psychological benefits of massage therapy, and many regions are experiencing a shortage of trained veterinarians to provide the high level of care today’s pet owners expect.
The demand for formally trained allied health professionals will continue to grow, and Globe University/Minnesota School of Business will provide training to position our students to take advantage of resulting career opportunities.
