Business basics, hospitality management essentials

At Globe University/Minnesota School of Business it is our goal to provide students with marketable skills that lead to career opportunities. When developing the hospitality management emphasis within our business management program, we consulted industry professionals to find out what employers were looking for in job candidates. Our advisory board identified areas that are now incorporated as core requirements in the Bachelor’s in Business Management: Hospitality program.

Strong fundamental business training

Before beginning studies in hospitality management, students complete 77 credits in fundamental business courses, including accounting, business administration, business communications, computer information systems, small business management, business law, operations management, leadership, business ethics and marketing. These fundamental requirements can be satisfied by completion of an Associate in Business Administration or Associate in Management Accounting degree.

Advanced courses in hospitality management

In the third and fourth years, students complete Hospitality Management courses that address issues specific to the industry, including the hospitality organization, hospitality industry trends, domestic and global hospitality service strategies, casino and gaming operations, food service management and service marketing.

The capstone course: apply management principles in the workplace

In a capstone externship course, students have the opportunity to apply their business management skills and knowledge of the hospitality industry under the supervision of a manager, providing them with valuable hands-on experience and professional networking relationships.

Students in the Business Management: Hospitality degree program also complete 55 credits in liberal arts electives, providing them with global perspectives and practice in critical and analytical problem solving.

Careers in travel, tourism, lodging and restaurant management

Hospitality management professionals train, schedule and supervise staff; schedule and implement purchasing of supplies, equipment, food and beverages; manage reservation systems; resolve customer problems and handle emergencies.

Whether you are coordinating cruise ship or riverboat casino events, managing a country hotel or operations manager in a top-flight restaurant, you will need excellent interpersonal skills and be able to handle a fast-paced, dynamic environment. You will never be bored, and your skills will transfer to any geographic area.
