Music Business Course Descriptions


Music business courses and degree programs at Globe University/Minnesota School of Business are taught by instructors with real-world experience, and emphasize practical applications that transfer from the college classroom directly to the industry. Hands-on instruction is provided in professional-quality music production labs, and business courses focus on issues specific to the entertainment industry. GU/MSB offers an Associate in Music Business degree and a Bachelor’s in Business Management: Music Business degree.

Music business courses:

MB100 Entertainment Networking and Self Promotion (3 Credits)
A comprehensive introduction to and overview of the most prominent aspects of the music industry: record companies, publishing, artist management and the economics of the music industry. Course will teach the structure and functions of the various aspects of the industry with an emphasis on how the student should position themselves through networking and self promotion.

MB125 Music Fundamentals (3 Credits)
This course is a fundamental overview of essential music vocabulary. Topics covered include basic aural and written musical expression, elements of music, musical structure and an introduction to music history. Students examine a variety of musical genres, develop critical listening habits and apply concepts presented in class through keyboard demonstrations.

MB151 Recording Industry (3 Credits)
This course examines the role of the recording industry in the music business. It explores the history of major and independent record labels, current record companies, the distribution of recorded music and the role of retail in music distribution. Students examine artist/label agreements, study contractual language and content and discuss current marketing techniques for record companies.

MB154 Copyright and Music Publishing (3 Credits)
This course explores the revenue stream created by copyrights, emphasizing copyright law as it pertains to sound recordings and songwriting. Students examine administration and sources of income generated by copyrighted materials through music publishing, study major publishing companies and analyze songwriter contracts with publishers and record labels.

MB155 Artist Management and Live Performance (4 Credits)
This course is a comprehensive overview of artist management. Topics include day-to-day responsibilities, methods to market in order to expose clients to the music industry and general public, how an artist manager typically gets paid, and strategies for attracting clients. The course also examines the concert industry and roles of booking agents, concert promoters and merchandising. When possible, students practice hands-on contracting, promotion and delivery of live performances at local venues, gaining valuable experience and developing contacts in the industry.

MB165 Music Business in Radio and Television (3 Credits)
This course presents the marketing, promotion and history of popular music in radio and television, emphasizing the relationship between the music business and radio and television. Students examine the effects of independent promotion, payola, music licensing and media consolidation and mergers on the music industry. Topics include advertising agencies, playlists, program direction, radio formats and the history of popular music in radio and television.

MB175 Audio Production (4 Credits)
This course introduces concepts, procedures and skills applied to audio production of music and other media. Students practice hands-on applications of the digital recording process, learning the fundamentals of the digital audio workstation and creating projects using sequencing, track recording, signal routing, signal processing and mixing basics. The keyboard synthesizer is used for audio production.

MB225 Midi Production (3 Credits)
Students apply and develop skills learned in Audio Production and learn the digital instrument protocol MIDI. Using ProTools and keyboard synthesizers, they practice MIDI connectivity and hardware and software applications. They also learn digital music and audio production techniques, integration of MIDI, and audio production with video.

MB250 Music Business Current Trends (3 Credits)
This course is a look at current events and trends in the music business. Students follow the changing dynamics of the music industry, focusing on new technologies such as digital distribution, Internet record companies, artist Web sites and online marketing and promotion. The course uses key industry trade magazines and Web sites to examine mergers and acquisitions of record companies, retail trends, and the changing landscape of key industry players and companies.

MB255 Music Business Advanced Topics (3 Credits)
This course must be taken in the final quarter of the program. Topics include advanced concepts of music economics, emphasizing production point systems, advance copyrights and publishing, executive production, budget management, record company administration, product delivery requirements and promotions. The course requires compilation of the written portion of the digital resume and creation of a business plan.
Prerequisites: AC110

MB275 Advanced Audio Production (4 Credits)
This course applies the concepts and skills learned in MB175 and MB225 to further studies in audio production. The student is encouraged to utilize their audio and MIDI production skills in the production of intermediate to advanced media projects. Emphasis is placed on advanced mixing skills and developing critical listening skills for the audio engineer. The course also explores the use of audio in multi-media applications for radio, video and the internet. The student should expect to complete a portfolio of work produced in the class for presentation to prospective employers.
