Military Student FAQ

Issues facing a military student are complex. The following are frequently asked questions (and answers) regarding military student benefits and policies at Globe University/Minnesota School of Business (GU/MSB).  1. How long has GU/MSB been around and is GU/MSB accredited?

Globe University was established in 1885 and Minnesota School of Business in 1877. Today they operate cooperatively as Globe University/Minnesota School of Business and are accredited by Accrediting Council  for Independent Colleges and Schools to grant master's, bachelor's and associate degrees. ACICS is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a recognized accrediting association.

2. Does GU/MSB have a military discount? What military benefits am I eligible to receive from GU/MSB?

Yes, GU/MSB offers a variety of benefits to military personnel and their dependents. For a listing of those benefits, please visit our Veterans’ Resources page.

3. How do I get started?

Detailed guides are provided for each branch of service, as well as to veterans, to advise you on what steps you should take in order to apply to the program, have your military training evaluated for college credit and use any military benefits you may be eligible to receive. These benefits can include TA and/or the GI Bill. Please select an admissions guide from the following list:

4. Can I receive college credit for my military training?

Yes, GU/MSB awards college credit for training evaluated and recommended by the American Council on Education. To request an official evaluation of your military training for college credit, please have your official transcripts sent to:

5. I plan on using Tuition Assistance (TA) to pay for my tuition. How does the registration and financial check-in process work?

TA guides are available for each branch of service, as well as for veterans and those employed through the Department of Defense. Please select one of the links below to view the applicable guide:

6. When is my TA authorization form due?

Due dates for TA will vary according to your branch of service. An approved paper TA form must be submitted to GU/MSB no later than one week after the start date of the term in which you plan to enroll.

GoArmyEd
As a GoArmyEd student, you may apply for TA through the GoArmyEd portal as soon as it opens for the specific term needed. Your TA request must be submitted through the portal no later than one week after the start date of the term in which you plan to enroll. 07-08 GoArmyEd TA Deadlines Military TA students may submit TA by fax to 1-651-332-8001 or scan and email to either veterans@globeuniversity.edu  or mhughes@globeuniversity.edu

7. How long will it take for my TA to be processed once I submit the TA form for authorizations?

Once submitted to our Financial Aid office, your TA will be processed within five business days. If financial check-in deadlines are near, TA processing time may take as long as 7-10 business days. After TA processing, you will receive email verification from our Financial Aid office, as well as instructions on how to complete financial check-in (the final step in completing your enrollment). Once you have received these instructions, please proceed with financial check-in unless, otherwise advised by our military student staff. 

8. I am eligible for the GI Bill/VA Benefits. How can I start receiving these benefits?

To begin utilizing these benefits, you must first complete certain VA paperwork before enrolling in classes. Please click on the applicable benefit listed below and follow the guide provided:

9. How much can I expect to receive for my GI Bill?

The GI Bill issues monthly payments based on your enrollment and course load or “training time.” Please review the VA training times and the VA monthly pay rates External Link Image based on chapter of benefit and course load. 

10. Why haven't I received my GI Bill funds? How long will it take for my funds to arrive?

In order to receive your monthly GI Bill benefits, you must verify your enrollment on the WAVE website External Link Image on the first of each month. Once your enrollment has been properly verified, payment will be issued to your account within 2-4 business days.

11. The VA asks for a VA Form 22-1999. What is this form and how is it submitted?

VA Form 22-1999 is an electronic enrollment certification that is submitted by our Financial Aid office. This certification reports your hours and term of enrollment to the VA through our certification portal, VA-Once. After the you have submitted your initial VA paperwork to our Military Students Services office, your subsequent enrollments will automatically be reported to us. Our VA Certifying Officials will then report your enrollment to the VA through this electronic form. You will then be notified by a confirmation email containing further instructions on how to proceed.

12. Who is eligible to receive GU/MSB discounted military rates and scholarships?

All Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard, honorably discharged vets, spouses and dependent family members qualify for the discounted military rate (pending verification of discharge status or orders).

13. Is GU/MSB a Servicemembers’ Opportunity College (SOC) member school?

Yes, Globe University is a member of the Servicemembers’ Opportunity College (SOC) consortium of schools.

14. How much is the application fee?

There is a $50 application fee at time of enrollment.

15. Am I eligible to use my military tuition assistance (TA) for online coursework?

Yes, service members are eligible to use their full entitlements per fiscal year on tuition expenses for online classes.

16. If I am deployed, can I withdrawal from my class without any negative consequences to my academic record or military TA?

Yes, you may withdraw from Globe University's online courses by simply providing us with a copy of your travel orders. If you are deployed at a moment’s notice, we will need a POC within your unit to verify your deployment status.

17. How many credits can I expect to receive within a given year?

Globe University offers four quarters per year and each quarter is 12 weeks in length. Academic schedules are flexible enough to allow the service member to take a full load (12-20 credits) or a single course (1-4 credits) per term. Most students take 12 credits per quarter.

18. Do I need any special software to access an online class?

No special requirements are needed other than an updated PC, Microsoft Office and access to the internet via dial-up or DSL. (Please refer to  for further details.)

19. How often do I have to attend class if I am completing a program online?

Academic requirements require you to access your online classroom a minimum of three times per week (Monday through Sunday). A portion of each student’s grade is based on the student’s contributions to class discussions. Assignments and exams are also required. A student with perfect attendance–logging in to class three or more times in a week–will receive a 20% discount on textbooks the following quarter.

20.  Do I have to be in an online class at a particular time?

No, our online program is asynchronous, meaning that student have 24/7 access to class. However, the instructor does have the option of holding a "live" chat room when students or the instructor feels the need to cover additional material or answer further questions.
