Job Seekers New Year’s Resolution

By Kelly Kleppen, Director of Career Services at Minnesota School of Business-PlymouthJob Seeking resolutions

Winter quarter is beginning and 2015 may have you thinking how to improve your job search. Here are a few resolutions for you to try.

  1.        Figure out your goals:

What positions do you see yourself in? How much do you want to make? What are you willing to do to succeed?  Figure out your goals and create smaller steps to help you succeed.

  1.        Continue to Network:

Talk to your friends, family, and neighbors about your job search. Ask your teachers for help finding connections. Complete your LinkedIn profile and continue to make new connections.

  1.        Be Organized:

Your time is precious, don’t waste it by applying to the same job over and over again. Create a document that keeps track of where you are applying, contact information, results after application, etc. This is especially important if you are applying for the same position at different companies.

  1.        Brand Yourself:

Make sure that your brand on paper and online are showing off the best YOU! Look over your resume, cover letter and references and make sure they are up-to-date, program specific and utilize accurate terminology. Along with updating your LinkedIn account, make sure that your other social media profiles are professional or are set to private.

  1.        Volunteer:

If you want an in at a certain company/organization, see if there are volunteer opportunities! Volunteering is another great way to flesh out your resume while making new connections.
