The new school year is starting soon. It’s an exciting time for most, but for some students and families, it is a difficult time. It’s important for students to be supplied with the essentials to get them through the school year, and this can be a struggle.
Earlier this summer disaster struck the Roosevelt Education Center located in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Fire broke out, destroying a good portion of the building. This created a hole in the educational needs of St. Cloud and the surrounding communities. The Roosevelt Education Center housed many early childhood programs and also stored supplies and materials needed by students experiencing homelessness. Backpacks and other supplies were desperately needed to replenish the lost items. Calls rang out for help.
Minnesota School of Business-St. Cloud heard the call and were eager to step up. The campus set a goal to fill 50 backpacks with necessary supplies for students in grades K-5. Student associations, individual students and staff members came together with various contributions and managed to nearly double the goal. The end result was 96 filled backpacks, plus a few extra bags of supplies!
Jen Loch, homeless liaison for District 742, works directly with those students that have the greatest needs. In the last school year, around 350 students needed supplies and assistance to either start or continue their much needed education. She was very grateful for the campus’ contribution and stated much was lost with the loss of the Roosevelt Education Center.
Career and Academic Services Coordinator Jessica Ward put forth a challenge at a recent Waite Park Chamber of Commerce meeting asking for area businesses to match the campus donations.
In addition to school supplies, winter is coming! Also lost in the fire at Roosevelt was winter gear and clothing that was to be given to students to help survive the dreaded Minnesota winter season. Jen said there is a dire need to restock their winter clothing supply. Coats, gloves, hats, scarves, boots and more are all needed.
If you would like to donate or help out, the following are the items/supplies that will need to be replaced:
