This winter quarter marked the completion of the first year as program chair of the accounting department for Kevin Ortloff.Kevin has a Master of Accounting degree for the University of Houston-Clear Lake and a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Kevin is a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and has over 15 years in the accounting field.
Kevin began his career after college as an officer in the Coast Guard where he specialized in drug interdiction. After serving in the Gulf War, Kevin decided to leave the Coast Guard and start a family. Unable to locate a decent paying job, Kevin decided to return to school to pursue a different career.
Kevin completed a year at a small community college to determine what he was interested in. He transferred to the University of Houston-Clear Lake to pursue his Masters in Accounting. While attending the University of Houston-Clear Lake, Kevin began working at a hospital in Galveston, Texas. His initial job was to restock shelves with medical supplies in the hospital units. As he completed his education and gained additional accounting knowledge, he transferred to various positions within the hospital.
When Kevin graduated, he was already working as an accountant in the Medicare Cost Reimbursements Department. After receiving his degree, Kevin decided to pursue his CPA license. Upon successfully completing the CPA exam, his only requirement remaining for licensure was work experience. The Medicare Cost Reimbursement Department did not have any CPAs to supervise him. So, Kevin began searching for a new position where he could obtain the required supervision. Kevin’s search lead him back to Hutchinson, Minn., where he was raised.
Since returning to Minnesota, Kevin has worked as a staff accountant in a small CPA firm, as the sole accountant for an agriculture construction company, and as the accountant responsible for the financial statement preparation and tax preparation at an agriculture commodities business. Kevin also has his own small tax service.
Regarding his experience so far at Minnesota School of Business-Shakopee, Kevin said, “I especially enjoy the one-on-one interaction with the students here at Shakopee. It really provides a great atmosphere for student learning.”
Kevin’s diverse background and commitment to the students here at Minnesota School of Business-Shakopee have certainly made him an asset to the campus.
