As the fifteenth season of NBC’s The Biggest Loser comes to an end this week, the Minnesota School of Business – Plymouth campus’ own weight loss event is also winding down. Since the beginning of January, four Wayzata High School faculty members have been working out with MSB Health Fitness Specialist students, who are serving as their personal trainers.
“This is a very fun campus event and a great opportunity for Health Fitness students to apply what they have learned in the classroom,” says Jason Strauch, Health Fitness Specialist program chair at Minnesota School of Business. “It’s also a great way to help members of the community by jumpstarting healthy lifestyles in the new year.”
The four staff members who chose to participate in the event are trained by selected MSB Health Fitness Specialist students who have completed certain courses. The workouts take place in the gym and brand new aerobic room located at the Plymouth campus.
Libby Fishbein, college representative for Minnesota School of Business, was the one who came up with the idea. “This is not only a way for us to further develop our relationship with nearby Wayzata High School,” she says, “but it’s an applied learning project that shows the community what our students are capable of.”
The contestants are ultimately competing with themselves to reach personal goals, while completing the total of eight training sessions within the month. The trainers offer a minimum of twice-weekly one-on-one sessions, but of course, the participants are able to work out more than that if they chose to do so. Each Wayzata faculty member was given a punch card, earning one punch for each workout completed. For every two sessions completed, they earn a 40% discount on a product from Minnesota School of Cosmetology. At the end of the month of training, each participant is eligible for a free makeover at MSC.
