Veteran of the Month Matthew Gilbert

Globe University and Minnesota School of Business are proud to partner with WCCO radio to honor our September Veteran of the Month, Matthew Gilbert.  Matthew enlisted in the Army as a senior at Anoka Senior High in 2003. A year later, in August 2004, he left for Basic Training at Fort Benning in Georgia where he was trained to become an Infantryman. After completing his training, he was stationed in Fort Lewis, Washington. He was assigned to 1st Battalion 23rd Infantry Regiment as a Company Commander’s radio operator and body guard.

From the summer of 2006 to September of 2007, Matthew was deployed to Iraq. He was involved in multiple responsibilities from clearing operations to providing help to the women and children throughout neighborhoods within Baghdad. In 2007, his deployment was extended for the “Surge” which increased the number of troops sent into Baghdad in order to provide security for the local population against Islamic extremists. Matthew helped to keep the people of the area safe while also delivering food and water.

Matthew was honored with multiple awards throughout his deployment including the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat and an Army Accommodation with “V” device for valorous acts in getting medical aid to wounded members of his unit and emergency air support. After his deployment, he re-enlisted with the Army National Guard as a Chaplain’s Assistant. Considering multiple directions for his future career, he chose to attend Bethel University and is pursuing a degree in Christian Ministry. Now married, Matthew and his wife are expecting his first child this month!

Globe University and Minnesota School of Business would like to say a huge thank you to Matthew and all the other veterans out there for all that you do for our country.
