100 Birthday Bags Provide Endless Smiles to Minnesota Children

Posted by on May 9, 2013

Minnesota School of Business-Rochester participates in a community service day each year by donating our time and resources to local organizations, mainly nonprofits that have causes that match our passion for giving back to the community. Much like past years’ projects with organizations including Ironwood Springs Christian Ranch and Camp Victory, MSB-Rochester is proud to continue our history and expand our horizons of community service by trying something new this year.

On May 17, 2013, MSB-Rochester faculty and staff will participate in a Birthday Bag Blitz for Cheerful Givers. In the tradition of embracing the philosophy that many hands make light work, faculty and staff will congregate in the commons area of the campus to stuff 100 birthday bags full of toys and other goodies. Additionally, participants will tap their creative spirit by personally making some heartfelt toys to add to the bags.

So why did we choose this organization and embrace their mission this year?

Cheerful Givers is an organization that provides toy-filled birthday gift bags to food shelves and shelters, so that parents living in poverty can give their children birthday gifts. Their vision is that all parents living in poverty will be able to provide birthdays for their children. Much like witnessing the bright, genuine smiles on children’s faces when they receive any gift, these gifts go beyond that. This simple gesture boosts self-esteem, enhances self-worth and strengthens bonds in families.

Haven’t heard of Cheerful Givers? Now that you have, we imagine more people will for two reasons: involvement and expansion.

This is a growing organization with a chapter of volunteers in Rochester, Minn. In 2012, 126,293 children in Minnesota received birthday gifts through this program. The organization hopes to serve 150,000 children in 2013.

The birthday bags from the 2013 Community Service Day will help Cheerful Givers reach this goal. The bags will be given to Channel One Food Bank in Rochester, one of the distribution outlets. Our hope is to honor the birthdays of 100 children right in our own community and put smiles on their faces.
