4 Easy Steps to Give Blood and Save Lives

Posted by on April 25, 2013

Did you know that one in three people will need blood at some point in their lifetime? Or that every two seconds someone in the world needs a blood transfusion?

“Those are absolutely true,” said Minnesota School of Business service learning coordinator Nicole Rasmussen. “Plus, blood can’t be synthetically made—that’s why it is so important for organizations to hold blood drives.”

Rasmussen organizes four blood drives a year through Memorial Blood Centers that are held at the Minnesota School of Business – Elk River campus about every three months.

“It’s a really rewarding experience to work with Memorial Blood Centers,” said Rasmussen.  “But I will say, getting people to sign up to give blood is sometimes a challenge.”

Rasmussen says people in general just don’t understand the process involved in giving blood and how easy and safe it really is.

According to the Memorial Blood Centers website, giving blood involves four simple steps:

1. Register – just head over to the Memorial Blood Centers website at mbc.org/searchdrives.  On the search page, you can search for a blood drive closest to you.  Enter sponsor code 3729 for the Minnesota School of Business – Elk River blood drive.

2. Have a mini-physical onsite—once you arrive to your appointment at the drive location, Memorial Blood Center trained staff will check your pulse, blood pressure, temperature, hemoglobin count and ask a few questions related to your health.

3. Donate—you get to sit down in a super comfy lounge chair and just chill as about two pints of blood are drawn.

4. Relax—Memorial Blood Centers gives you a yummy snack and a beverage as you just hang out for a bit to ensure you aren’t light headed when you sit up.

That’s it!  The total appointment time takes about an hour; however, the donation time only takes about 10 minutes.  Just think, by donating one hour of your time you are saving up to three lives!

So, the question is, do you feel like being a hero?

If so, register for Minnesota School of Business—Elk River’s upcoming blood drive on May 22nd and help us exceed our goal of collecting 14 units of blood!

To register, head over to mbc.org/searchdrives and enter sponsor code 3729.
