Diva, Author, Arbitrator, Instructor: Faculty Spotlight

Barbara Leiran, J.D., has been an adjunct instructor for Globe University/Minnesota School of Business since 2006. Barb has had the opportunity to instruct at many of the Twin Cities campuses, and has been teaching at the Lakeville campus for three years. Barb brings over 12 years of experience to the legal studies degree program and has also taught in the business program. She has a unique background that includes courtroom experience, teaching, and owning and operating her own law firm. Barb has taught many lelegal studies degreegal classes, but primarily teaches Legal Research, Legal Writing,  Family Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution and Litigation. Barb has a Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration & Management from the University of Minnesota, and an A.A.S. in Finance from Northwest Technical College.

Barb currently maintains an active mediation and arbitration practice, Metro Mediation, LLC, in St. Paul. Over the years as a court appointed Arbitrator, Barb has rendered numerous decisions involving complex Civil and Family Law matters. Prior to starting her own practice, while working for Thomson Reuters, Barb provided Westlaw training and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) instruction to hundreds of attorneys throughout the country including judges, solicitor general legal staff, professors, correctional facility personnel, private firms and nonprofit organizations.

During her tenure with the Office of the Ramsey County Attorney, Barb appeared on hundreds of cases including paternity, child support and enforcement actions.  She also worked for the National Arbitration Forum where she wrote hundreds of decisions and memoranda (on domain name dispute resolution issues) for arbitrators throughout the United States and the world.  While in law school, Barb represented prisoners on various civil matters, devoted hundreds of hours to the Innocence Project, served as a tenant advocate and raised over $100,000 for the law school’s annual fund.

Barb was a contributing author for the Minnesota State Bar Association’s Family Law Forum, Spring 2009, Volume 17, No. 3: “Swimming with Sharks: Dealing with Difficult or Deceptive Opposing Attorneys.” Barb is also one of the original members of Juris Divas: “Smart, sassy lawyers or judges who enjoy good times, good stories and good friends…” See Minnesota Law & Politics.

On a personal note, as a single parent of four children, Barb put herself through undergrad and law school. Currently, Barb is married to St. Paul attorney Kevin G. Leiran (who also is a legal studies adjunct instructor at MSB-Lakeville), has five children and one grandchild. Barb has remained an active member of the legal community, participating in a wealth of fundraising and other events throughout the years.

Barb’s story demonstrates the power of perseverance and the great success that can result from hard work and dedication. Barb has been a great asset to Minnesota School of Business-Lakeville and our students’ education.
