AVID Is In the Air

The Minnesota School of Business – Brooklyn Center Campus is thrilled to announce that we are an AVID college (only the third institution in Minnesota!), and we will “officially” launch in January 2013!

Many have heard the word AVID around campus over the past six months as we are in our first year of implementation. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, and it is a college readiness system that has been very successful at elementary and secondary levels of education. Building on their 30-year history of student success, AVID launched AVID for Higher Education to focus on the unique challenges that face post-secondary students.

“AVID for Higher Education (AHE)… partners with institutions of higher education to systemically address the goals of increased learning, persistence, completion and success in and beyond college. AVID assists higher education professionals in analyzing existing student support initiatives and data, identifying barriers and needs, and establishing and assessing student learning outcomes.” (http://www.avid.org/hed_overview.html)

What does AVID mean for students, faculty, and staff at the Minnesota School of Business-Brooklyn Center campus? AVID learning strategies and methods will be used campus-wide beginning Winter 2013 quarter. EVERY class will use AVID strategies such as Cornell Notes, 3-2-1 activities, Speaker’s Panels, Jigsaw activities, and more. Furthermore, AVID strategies will be used in EVERY department including Financial Aid, the Education Department, Admissions, Career Services, and more. The Brooklyn Center Campus AVID Team (aka AVID Up!)  and our entire campus has been busy behind the scenes with training and preparation.

Our Brooklyn Center Campus message for students is: “AVID is our way to teach you effective study habits for rigorous content, to help you take advantage of campus resources, and to ensure you have the skills to be successful.”

In the weeks leading up to Winter quarter, much more information will be shared with students, faculty, and staff. In the mean time, please check out AVID’s website.

Thank you for your Interest in Minnesota School of Business.
