William Becker knew he wanted a career in accounting
since his junior year of high school. He did his research on the accounting field and saw the demand outlook was great in Minnesota.
William liked that he could practice public, private or governmental accounting and the different variations such as auditing, tax, government, corporate, and general accounting. He chose Minnesota School of Business because of the flexibility the class schedule allowed. He was able to work while going to school to help pay for his education. He says the small class sizes helped in his decision as well.
William is currently an Accountant Associate at Xerox Corporation. He said the steps he took to get there included creating an eye catching resume with keywords that matched what the employer was looking for. He searched for and applied to jobs through Indeed, CareerBuilder and company websites. He would also research the employer before
applying as well as follow-up after applying. He mastered his interviewing skills so he was able to think quickly on his feet when asked interview questions.
William did not expect there to be so much competition as there was to work for a Fortune 500 company. He recommends acknowledging
the challenge and preparing for the interviews.
William’s future goals include becoming a Senior Accountant within the next five years. He would like to someday be a VP or Director of Finance or Accounting but he adds, “We’ll see where life takes me.”
William has great advice for students. He recommends
planning and thinking early. That means gaining experience through internships during school so you can put yourself above the rest of the competition.
William adds, “Continue to challenge yourself and never give up.”
