Did you know winning scholarships is a numbers game? Did you know MSB will match any outside scholarships you acquire, up to $1,000 a year?
Recently I created and delivered a presentation to Elk River High School seniors and their families. While preparing the presentation I read online that there are 1.5 million
scholarships available to students in the U.S. right now. I don’t know the accuracy of that claim, but I did a little math; assuming the average scholarship is $500, that is 750 billion dollars in scholarships!
Applying for those scholarships IS a numbers game! You will have a greater likelihood of winning a scholarship if you apply for 50 than if you apply for 2. Scholarship searching is a lot like looking for a job, if you send out 1 or 2 resumes you will not likely get a call from a prospective employer, but if you send out 50–your likelihood goes up dramatically.

I hear students frequently say, a million people will apply for the same scholarship. In many cases that is true, but if you take the time to create a professional application and in many cases professional essay, you have the same shot as the other students who have applied for the scholarship. As the Great Wayne Gretzky once said “You’ll always miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” So take a shot!
For those students who make payments to MSB, scholarships are a perfect opportunity for you to reduce your payments or eliminate them completely. Remember when making payments, Darlene Hensch, our Student Accounts representative is here to assist you and
she wanted me to remind everyone not to be afraid to call her with questions, she is here to help!
And remember MSB will match up to $1,000 a year on scholarships received by the school. Be on the lookout for scholarships, Yolanda and I try to get scholarship opportunities out there to you through Facebook, the Installment and email whenever we can. But ultimately, searching for scholarships is your responsibility and it could pay off big time.
One last math problem for you, if you search for scholarships for 20 hours and send out 50 applications and get one $500 scholarship; that seems small doesn’t it; you just technically made $25/hr. That is some serious money to help pay for school!
