How Far Should IP Protections Reach?

There are a lot of patents and trademarks out there, but how far should IP protections reach?  With the Olympics in London this upcoming summer, British Parliament was required to pass additional legal protections for the Olympics trademarks in order to secure the Games.  Companies that are not official sponsors of the games will likely not be allowed use phrases that combine “Games” or “2012” with words like “London” or “sponsor.”  The Guardian wrote an extensive article on the issue: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012/apr/13/olympics-2012-branding-police-sponsors
