Kristina Newton, Associate Dean at the Minnesota School of Business Blaine Campus, volunteered as a judge for the MAAP STARS Conference on Thursday, April 19th, 2012 at the Ramada MOA in Bloomington. She judged the “Employment Interview” competition and conducted mock interviews with approximately 30 high school students from Minnesota alternative learning centers.
Kristina appreciated the opportunity to judge the event and was impressed by the preparedness of many of the students. It was clear that many students spent much time preparing for the event by how they demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of the entire interview process. The best students greeted the interviewers with firm handshakes and handed over well-formed resumes. They answered questions thoroughly by giving specific examples that illustrated their skills and ended the interviews by asking questions, clarifying follow-up, and leaving thank-you card for the judges. These are the same skills that MSB teaches its students and it was encouraging to see such young students have a solid grasp on the interview process.
This is the second year that Kristina has judged the “Employment Interview” event at the MAAP STARS Conference. She believes that this is a great opportunity to meet future MSB students. “The alternative high school students that I interviewed already face many of the same obstacles that MSB students face. Many are working full-time, raising children, or are the first in their families to graduate from high school. I definitely see how the career training programs that MSB offers could benefit these students after graduation,” she said.
