Is Your Social Media Keeping You from Getting a Job?

It continues to become a hot topic for employers and potential employees are continually being warned to watch what they post online. So how important is it to keep an eye on your Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts?

A recent survey done by OPP in the UK and Ireland found that:

56 percent of respondents said that they were likely to check out the social media presence of potential employees (although 27 percent of those surveyed said they would be uncomfortable with the same being done to them). On the flip side, 37 percent of people said they change their persona online — so looking at their online presence may be misleading anyway.

So what can you do to keep a good image online?

  • Lock Down Your Facebook Account – make it only available to friends.
  • Behave on LinkedIn – Treat it like a professional networking event.
  • Don’t Put Your Guard Down –  once hired be resistant to accepting colleges friend requests as well as your boss’s.
