The Minnesota School of Business-Moorhead massage therapy program tries to get its students as much hands-on experience as possible. Thanks to a partnership with Minnesota State University-Moorhead athletics, that is exactly what they are getting.
MSB-Moorhead Students in the Sports Massage class spent an afternoon off campus at Nemzek Hall, applying their skills on Dragon student-athletes as a service-learning project. Runners, wrestlers, and basketball players all had the opportunity to receive sports massages. Those who did certainly appreciated it.
“We have learned a lot from the massage students because they help with evaluation and treatment in terms of injuries,” said MSUM Athletic Trainer Ronda Peterson. “The massages have helped with injuries in general and it’s definitely a bonus for us.”
The partnership also benefited MSB students, as it allowed them to practice sports-specific massage techniques on the MSUM athletes. The project truly brought classroom instruction full circle for the those students participating.
“You can really feel the difference in what muscles were used for the sport they were in,” said student Mira McLain. “It was cool to see the changes and get that kind of hands-on experience.”
The massage therapy program plans to continue its partnership with MSU Moorhead and provide future opportunities for its students.
