On Monday, January 16, 2012, there will be no classes and the campus will be closed to commemorate the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was the renowned Baptist minister who led the non-violent protest movement during the Civil Rights era in America in the 1960’s. He is perhaps best known for his inspiring “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered at the March on Washington in August of 1963.
After King’s assassination in April of 1968, the campaign began for a national holiday in his honor, but it was not instituted and observed until January 20, 1986. It was not until the year 2000 that all 50 states officially observed the federal holiday, some states calling it by alternative names or combining it with other holidays.
