Lakeville Assists Burnsville High School’s Fledgling DECA Program

On Wednesday January 4th MSB – Lakeville’s DECA Advisory Board spent the evening helping Burnsville High School’s DECA club prepare for its upcoming district competition. This is Burnsville’s first year of having a DECA club after a 20 year hiatus.

The Advisory Board, consisting of Craig Wilson, Accounting Program Chair; Brian Saintey, Director of Admissions; Tom Hilla, Public Relations; Anjy Buck, Finance Department; and Elise Larson, Academic Coordinator, along High School Representative Lindsay Rafinson coached 26 DECA students through variety of techniques. They modeled good and bad role playing, had the students do 1 minute impromptu speeches, and finished the evening
coaching them one on one in their events.

Meggan Malone, Burnsville’s DECA advisor, sent the following comments to her high school principals after the event:

Burnsville DECA had a unique opportunity to work with the staff at Minnesota School of Business to help prepare for the upcoming District Competition. In small groups and in one-on-one settings, the students practiced and received competitive tips from experts in the field. MSB’s energy for DECA inspired my students while creating excitement for their
competitive events.

This was the third high school DECA club MSB-Lakeville has assisted in preparation for the District competition. In all over 200 high school students have been assisted and connections created between students and MSB. Deep relationships between MSB-Lakeville and the business educators at these schools have been forged leading to invitations to present topics in their high school classrooms.

This is attested by Ms. Malone as she said, “I can’t tell you how wonderful it was to have you all take time out of your evenings to work with my students. Thank you!”

Craig Wilson and Susan Furtney, IT Chair, will be traveling to Century Community College on Friday, January 6th to judge at the Regional High School Competition for Business Professionals of America. They were invited by the Eastview High School’s club advisor, Leah Lencowski. Craig will then be presenting accounting careers to Ms. Lencowski’s
accounting class on Monday, January 9, 2012.

What a season of building high school connections for MSB-Lakeville!

Thank you for your Interest in Minnesota School of Business.
