The Minnesota School of Business-Moorhead is partnering with the Fargo Force, a local USHL hockey franchise in the area, on a Reading Program for local schools. The goal of this program is to encourage youth in our community to develop a love for reading and to promote the value, importance and enjoyment of reading and literacy. The program is designed to reward those students who spend a portion of their time reading.
The program is free to classrooms with children ages Kindergarten to 6th grade within a 30 mile radius of Fargo-Moorhead. The program will begin on November 1 and will conclude on March 2. The deadline for classes to register to participate in the program is October 23. One poster will be given to the teacher to track the class’s progress towards reaching their goal as a group and an individual booklet will be given to each student to track their own success. The posters and booklets will be delivered to the teachers the week before the start of the program.
Throughout the course of the 4-month program, participating classrooms will have the opportunity to sign up for the Fargo Force mascot, Kid Bobble, players, and representatives of Minnesota School of Business to visit their class!
The teacher/administrator of each classroom will receive booklets for each student in their class as well as a class poster. The booklet is separated into 3 periods, where the student must reach their individual goal in order to get to the next period. The 3 period goals are as follows:
1st Period 700 minutes read
2nd Period 1400 minutes read
3rd Period 2100 minutes read
Upon completing each goal, the student will be awarded a prize as an incentive to continue reading and complete the 4-month program! The student will receive the following prizes depending on what level they reach:
1st Period Fargo Force/MSB Pencil
2nd Period FREE Reserved Seat Ticket Voucher for a Fargo Force Home Game
3rd Period Fargo Force/MSB Drawstring Backpack
Teachers will be provided the pencils and vouchers at the beginning of the program and are to award their students as the individual goals are accomplished. At the completion of the program, all students who achieved the goal of 2100 minutes read will receive a Fargo Force drawstring backpack. All teachers are to report the number of students who completed the highest goal at the end of the program so that the correct number of backpacks may be delivered. The completed reading logs will need to be turned into the Fargo Force upon delivery of the backpacks.
The Fargo Force encourage all students to reach beyond their goals as a special prize will come to the classroom who has read for the most minutes as a group at the end of the program! When the program concludes on March 2, 2012, the classroom with the highest combined total of minutes read will receive a class trip to a Fargo Force game where they will be announced and put up on the big screen and will also have an exclusive meet and greet with the entire team following the game!
At the end of each month (November, December, January, February), each participating teacher is to nominate one student for the Fargo Force Reading Program’s Reader of the Month stating a couple of reasons as to why they are deserving! Each Reader of the Month will be awarded a certificate and will be invited as a special guest to a game, where they will be announced and put up on the big screen!
