College students partner with local Y to fight childhood obesity

Minnesota School of Business-St. Cloud music business and medical assistant students worked together with the St. Cloud YMCA to promote healthy, active lifestyles for area youth through a music video.

Students in Jennifer Potter’s CMA Review class thought a music video would be the best vehicle to spread the message about childhood obesity. They reached out to music business program chair Gary Sklenar for help.

Medical assistant students chose the music and wrote appropriate lyrics. They worked with the YMCA staff and area children to create a promotional video called “Let’s Get Physical.”

Students participated in activities and shot footage for the video at the kickoff for Camp C.H.A.D. (Children: Healthy & Active Daily) at the YMCA.

“We’re terrible singers,” laughed student Victoria Holmquist, but “the song gave the video character,” said student Karla Walz.

After the event, Minnesota School of Business produced and edited the video, which was posted to Facebook and will also be published on the YMCA’s website.
