Design students advertise Elk River’s Halloween Fun Fair
Three design students at Minnesota School of Business-Elk River collaborated with Rivers Edge Downtown Business Association to promote the city’s annual Halloween Fun Fair.
“It was fun having the students assist on the poster for the event,” said association member Wendy Simenson. “It is always helpful to get new ideas to use in advertising.”
Students in Cliff Allen’s Design Studio class acted as an in-house creative design team to develop three eye-catching poster options for the association.
Assuming the roles of account manager, production manager and graphic designer, students gathered project specifications and drew thumbnail sketches. They used graphic software to identify the best layout and color schemes and after obtaining printing cost estimates, delivered a polished, professional product before deadline.
This collaboration gave students the opportunity to step out of the classroom environment and experience the professional world.
“Creating a design is all about knowledge, communication and trusting your instincts to make the client happy,” said student Misty Shaffer.
The poster likely contributed to the success of the event—more than 300 kids and parents came downtown for a safe night of Halloween fun.
